Research Inspirations: Daniela Bevilacqua
In this post about Research Inspirations, I’d like to introduce you to a colleague and friend – Daniela Bevilacqua. Daniela might not (yet) have the standing of some of the great names in Religious Studies, but her work is fascinating, and people interested in yoga and South Asian traditions both within and outside the academy should be aware of it.
Daniela is steeped in direct knowledge of the kinds of contemporary yoga that are sadly much less visible than the mainstream. Writing an expose of YogaWorks or analysing the covers of Yoga Journal is vital and interesting work, but it takes a special kind of researcher to spend years hanging out with sadhus in India and charming your way into their lives.
For those that don’t know, that special skill set is known as ethnography, and while I was working at SOAS, we interviewed Daniela for our series on Understanding Yoga Studies about how she does what she does:
